why nICHt? is a literary magazine that publishes short stories, illustrations, photographs, and poems. The magazine is released once a year, but in an extensive edition. Mag. Dr. Irina Brantner, MLitt., is the driving force behind the brand, coordinating contributors and curating the content.
The task: This year, I had the opportunity to participate in the project, bringing a fresh perspective with my expertise. This involved not only redesigning the magazine's layout but also creating a new logo.
Logo: The client is a great admirer of the works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a Scottish architect, interior designer, craftsman, designer, graphic artist, and painter (1868–1929). Hence, the new typography was inspired by Mackintosh. It appears modern and simple yet incorporates subtle Art Nouveau elements..
The choice of the fonts: The magazine’s layout was also revised, with slight adjustments to the text’s visual structure and a redefinition of the font. Since the magazine is published in multiple languages, including German, English, French, Italian, and Russian, choosing the font posed a significant challenge. The selected font had to be modern, simple, and highly legible while also reflecting Mackintosh's style in the headlines.
The final magazine consists of 272 pages, including transparent pages preceding the illustrations and photographs.
